Take tea to avoid heart problems, diabetes

'' Take tea to avoid heart problems, diabetes ''

While many of us may remain undecided about how much is too much for us to take tea in a day, researchers have claimed drinking three cups of tea a day could help us keep the heart attacks and type 2 diabetes at bay.

A review shows regular drinking of tea, with or without milk, can reduce the risk of heart problems by cutting levels of bad cholesterol and blood sugar, Daily Mail reported.

As per experts, the benefits of tea are largely due to the flavonoid content - antioxidant ingredients that counteract cardiovascular disease.

One cup of tea provides 150-200mg of flavonoids and it is the best source of antioxidants in the diet.

Drinking three or more cups of black tea a day protects against heart disease and two or more cups a day may protect against type 2 diabetes, a review in the journal Nutrition Bulletin found.

Nutritionist Carrie Ruxton, co-author of the latest review and a member of the industry-backed Tea Advisory Panel (TAP), said: "There is far more to the nation's favourite drink than we realise."

"With its antioxidant flavonoids, black tea packs a powerful punch with many health benefits particularly for the heart. And recent studies show that the flavonoids work their magic whether or not we choose to add milk, Carrie added."

In addition, a 12-week study of 87 volunteers showed how drinking three cups of tea a day produced a significant improvement in various cardiovascular risk factors.

Flavonoids found in tea are thought to control inflammation, reduce excess blood clotting, promote blood vessel function and limit furring up of the arteries....Dr.B.Sriganesh. BDS, PGDHM.

Smokers' diabetes risk higher up to 5yrs after quitting: Study

‎'' Smokers' diabetes risk higher up to 5yrs after quitting: Study ''

A research team led by the National Cancer Center said on Wednesday it has found that smokers continue to face an elevated risk of diabetes up to five years after quitting.

Its 10-year survey of about 59,000 people aged 40 to 69 between 1990 and 2003 confirmed that smokers, both men and women, face higher risks of diabetes, with the risk within five years after giving up still 2.84 times that of nonsmokers for women, and 1.42 times for men, it said.

But the risks fall to levels similar to those of nonsmokers from around five years after quitting the habit, it said.

The more cigarettes they smoked before quitting, the higher the risk is, reaching 2.15 times the risk of nonsmokers for men who habitually smoked 25 or more cigarettes per day.....Dr.B.Sriganesh. BDS, PGDHM.

Pop Vitamin A pills daily to prevent skin cancer

‎'' Pop Vitamin A pills daily to prevent skin cancer! ''

A daily vitamin pill could help prevent skin cancer – particularly among women, the Daily Mail reported Friday. Scientists say taking food supplements containing vitamin A can make people less likely to develop melanoma, the deadliest form of the disease. A study found that retinol – a key component of Vitamin A – could protect against the illness. The strongest protective effects were found in women and in sun exposed sites, suggesting retinol actually combats skin cancer. Previous research with mice has shown retinol and carotenoids can shrink melanoma tumours and improve survival.
There are some other measures you can take to reduce the disk of reducing skin cancer. Some of them are to avoid indoor tanning, mid day exposure and increase the use of sunscreen. Tobacco products should be avoided. In the summers one should wear protective clothing like long sleeves and hats....Dr.B.Sriganesh. BDS, PGDHM.

Dark chocolate keeps heart disease and other health problems away!

‎'' Dark chocolate keeps heart disease and other health problems away! ''

There has been ample research to suggest that dark chocolate has immense health benefits. It’s supposed to keep hear disease away, lowers blood pressure, lowers cholesterol and do we really need to expound the feel-good qualities of this food item! It contains less sugar and milk compared to regular chocolate which reduces the calorie count. So treat yourself to some dark chocolate.Welcome to the dark side.
Here are some of the more unknown benefits of dark chocolate.
1. Reduces heart attack risk - Antioxidants protect the body from aging caused by free radicals, which can suppress the chances of heart attacks. Also it is the oxidative damage by free radicals that is responsible for cancer.
2. Lowers blood pressure - Flavonoids (the antioxidants in chocolate) lower high blood pressure through the production of nitric acid and helps maintain hormonal balance.
3. Lowers cholesterol- Dark chocolate Lowers LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) by 10% according to some studies.
4. Makes you happy – Like exercising, chocolate stimulates endorphin production which gives an immense sense of pleasure. Alcohol too gives an endorphin high but then chocolate is a much healthier option and isn’t known to cause liver damage.
5. Lowers depression – Chocolate raises your serotonin level (neurotransmitter) which acts as an anti-depressant.
6. Acts as a stimulant - Theobromine can be described as a stimulant similar to caffeine but without affecting the Central Nervous System to a great extent which gives a similar feel-good effect.
7. Mostly contains good fat – Chocolate contains three kinds of fat in equal proportion:
The Good: Oleic Acid is a healthy monounsaturated fat that occurs in olive oil as well.
The Neutral: Stearic Acid is a saturated fat but one which research shows has no effect on cholesterol levels.
The Ugly: Palmitic Acid is also a saturated fat (the bad fat), one which raises cholesterol and heart disease risk. So we can see 2/3 of the fat from dark chocolate isn’t bad at all. We are not saying that you tuck into a pound of chocolate a day though.
8. Acts as an aphrodisiac - Chocolate has long been linked to sexual desire. In fact it was the Aztecs who drew a connection between cocoa beans and libido. Chocolate contains two chemicals with aphrodisiac qualities: tryptophan (building block of serotonin) a brain chemical involved in sexual arousal and phenylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine, which is released in the brain when people fall in love.
9. Contains lots of natural minerals - As a plant-based cocoa contains many naturally occurring minerals that boost your health. Some of them are copper, iron, magnesium, potassium and calcium....Dr.B.Sriganesh. BDS, PGDHM.

First ever 3D-printed jaw transplanted into patient’s face

‎'' First ever 3D-printed jaw transplanted into patient’s face ''

Doctors have for the first time fitted a 3D printer-created lower jaw to an 83-year-old woman’s face in the Netherlands.

The transplant was carried out in June, but is publicised only now.

The implant was made out of titanium powder - heated and fused together by a laser, one layer at a time.

Technicians say the operation’s success paves the way for the use of more 3D-printed patient-specific parts.

The surgery follows research carried out at the Biomedical Research Institute at Hasselt University in Belgium, and the implant was built by LayerWise - a specialised metal-parts manufacturer based in the same country.

The patient involved had developed a chronic bone infection. Doctors believed reconstructive surgery would have been risky because of her age and so opted for the new technology.

The implant is a complex part - involving articulated joints, cavities to promote muscle attachment and grooves to direct the regrowth of nerves and veins.

“Once we received the 3D digital design, the part was split up automatically into 2D layers and then we sent those cross sections to the printing machine,” Ruben Wauthle, LayerWise’s medical applications engineer, told the BBC.

“It used a laser beam to melt successive thin layers of titanium powder together to build the part.

“This was repeated with each cross section melted to the previous layer. It took 33 layers to build 1mm of height, so you can imagine there were many thousand layers necessary to build this jawbone,” he explained.

Once completed, the part was given a bioceramic coating. The team said the operation to attach it to the woman’s face took four hours, a fifth of the time required for traditional reconstructive surgery.

“Shortly after waking up from the anaesthetics the patient spoke a few words, and the day after the patient was able to swallow again,” said Dr Jules Poukens from Hasselt University, who led the surgical team.

“The new treatment is a world premiere because it concerns the first patient-specific implant in replacement of the entire lower jaw,” Poukens stated.

The woman was able to go home after four days.

Her new jaw weighs 107g, just over a third heavier than before, but the doctors said that she should find it easy to get used to the extra weight.

Follow-up surgery is scheduled later this month when the team will remove healing implants inserted into holes built into the implant''s surface.

A specially made dental bridge will then be attached to the part, following which false teeth will be screwed into the holes to provide a set of dentures.

The team said that it expected similar techniques to become more common over the coming years.......Dr.B.Sriganesh. BDS, PGDHM.

Do you have these symptoms of diabetes?

‎'' Do you have these symptoms of diabetes? ''

India is now termed the ‘diabetes capital of the world’ with 40 million or four crore people currently suffering from the disease. By 2025, it is estimated that one in every five Indian will be a diabetic. With these kind of statistics, it is necessary that you follow a healthy lifestyle and be on the lookout for any of the following symptoms that might indicate diabetes. We’ve tried to compile a list of questions after answering which you might be able to assess if you have any of the diabetic symptoms:
1. Have you noticed an increase in appetite lately?
This could indicate polyphagia caused by body cells starving for glucose, which isn’t able to move into the cells in the case of a diabetic.
2. Do you have to visit the loo for urination more often these days?
This indicates polyuria caused by high amount of glucose in the urine.
3. Are you thirsty most of the time?
This could be polydypsia caused by the increase in urination and loss of fluids.
4. Have you lost a considerable amount of weight lately even after having an increase in appetite?
In diabetes, the body is unable to utilize the available glucose. For want of fuel, it then starts burning fat which leads to weight loss.
5. Have you been feeling fatigued all day long lately?
Since the glucose stores aren’t utilized, the body is unable to get its energy and hence feels more fatigued.
6. Do your feet and fingers feel a tingling or numb sensation?
The high glucose levels in the body can affect the nerves and this can cause what is called ‘diabetic neuropathy’ causing tingling and numbness in the peripheries of the body.
7. Have you been suffering from infections more frequently than earlier?
The reduced nutrition levels in the body’s cells can decrease the immunity leading to frequent infections especially in the skin, vagina and urinary bladder.
8. Is your vision appearing blurred these days?
The shape and flexibility of the lens of the eye changes due to high blood sugar, thus distorting the ability to focus. This causes blurred vision.
9. Do you have cuts or wounds that have not been healing for a long time?
Due to a weakened immune system and increased predilection for infections, wound healing is poor in diabetics.
10. Have you been highly irritable and/or depressed lately?
This can be due to the decreased glucose supply and nutrition to the brain.
If you have noticed any of the above symptoms, it’s time you visit a doctor soon. Diabetes does not mean a death sentence – it is a disease one can live with, provided proper lifestyle changes and treatment as advised by the doctor are followed....Dr.B.Sriganesh. BDS, PGDHM.

Quit smoking or die!

'' Quit smoking or die! ''

The harmful effects of smoking are well known. Cigarettes contain many carcinogens and smoking is one of the major causes of cancer for active and passive smokers. It is our duty to kick the butt not only for our own well-being but for people in the vicinity who are inhaling second-hand smoke. Smoking has no moral defence and it is our responsibility to ensure that we stop harming ourselves and our loved ones.
The decision to quit smoking is the most important decision of you life. It is not easy by any means but it can be done. Think about the following points before we get to the action plan:
What was your reason of starting to smoke, the first time ever?
How many cigarettes do you smoke in a day?
When are the times when you feel the urge to smoke?
Where do you buy your usual stock of cigarettes from?
Do you smoke alone or with company?
Do your family/ loved ones know you smoke?
The Quit Smoking Campaign
Reduce the number of cigarettes to absolute necessities (the numbers and times can be derived from question 2 & 3 above).
The urge to smoke is usually after a meal or a stressful situation. When your system gets its daily prescribed dose, it gets tuned to the number of nicotine doses. The other times when you would smoke are usually excuses.
Create a proper ‘quit smoking’ plan. Instead of suddenly cutting off entirely one fine day, make a plan to reduce gradually – from two packets to one packet in the first 15 days, from one packet to around five in the next 15 and so on.
Let people around you know that you’re trying to quit (the list of people as derived from questions 4,5 & 6 above). Letting your friends, family (in case they know) and even your regular paanwala (seller) about your decision to quit smoking is a good idea if you don’t trust yourself. They can keep a tab on your impulses.
Ditch your usual smoking-friends ring their smoke breaks. Don’t try to be brave by being an observer in your group. You can always catch up with chit-chat with the same group later.
You might have started smoking as a habit as a result of peer pressure, to help cope with some stress or to experience something exciting. Talk yourself out of the core reason for starting to smoke.
You can try a nicotine substitute; some even try chewing gum, mint, chocolate or food (although that can be addictive too). A dummy mint cigarette often acts as a psychological comfort.
Nicotine curbs hunger by constantly releasing stored fats and sugar into blood. So, when you are trying to quit, you should have more frequent, small meals so that the hunger doesn’t add to the withdrawal symptoms.
Nicotine is alkaloid. To counteract this, you should drink acidic juices for the first 3-4 days. This will help you get nicotine out of your system.
Reward yourself after every milestone -maybe every 15 days or a month. Remember the reward cannot be a pack of cigarettes!
What to expect
Withdrawal – symptoms like headaches, stomach cramps, parched throat, even nausea can occur during the withdrawal phase. Consult your physician to deal with severe symptoms.
Craving – the urge to smoke might be overpowering. An effective distraction and a good support system will help you get through this phase.
Mood changes – the alterations you are making in your system cause many physical and hence emotional changes. Emotional symptoms may include irritability, restlessness, anxiety pangs and distress.
Change of mind – giving up is always easier than holding on. Trust your decision. It is definitely one of the better ones.
So this World Cancer Day take a pledge to kick the butt, not only for yourself but for all your loved ones. Smoking is not cool and you know it.

Reheated cooking oil releases compounds which can lead to cancer, mental disorders

'' Reheated cooking oil releases compounds which can lead to cancer, mental disorders''

Re-heating cooking medium such as sunflower oil could release toxic compounds, which could be linked with brain diseases and some types of cancer.
Researchers from the University of the Basque Country (the region comprising three provinces of northern Spain on the Bay of Biscay bordering france in the north-east) have been the first to discover the presence of certain aldehydes in food, which may be linked with neurodegenerative diseases and some cancers.
“It was known that at frying temperature, oil releases aldehydes that pollute the atmosphere and can be inhaled, so we decided to research into whether these remain in the oil after they are heated, and they do,” said study co-author Maria Dolores Guillen, the journal Food Chemistry reports.
Until now these substances had only been seen in bio-medical studies, where their presence in organisms is linked to different types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, according to a statement.
The toxic aldehydes are a result of degradation of the fatty acids in oil, and although some are volatile, others remain after frying. That is why they can be found in cooked food. As they are very reactive compounds they can react with proteins, hormones and enzymes in the organism and impede its correct functioning.
The research involved heating three types of oil (olive, sunflower and flax seeds) in an industrial deep fryer at 190 ºC. This was carried out for 40 hours, eight hours a day in the first two, and 20 hours for the linseed oil.
The latter is not normally used for cooking in the west, but it has been chosen due to its high content in omega 3 groups.
